Larry Cox

Although he was originally from Sebring, Larry spent his early radio years at Haines City’s WHAN and Winter Haven’s WSIR. During the 1960’s, he worked at some of the top stations in Central Florida, including Cypress Gardens’ WGTO (mid-days), WWKE Ocala (mornings), plus shifts at WROD Daytona Beach and Orlando’s WORJ.

In the 70’s, he was appointed program director at WSIR, worked at Lakeland’s WLAK, where he would later do mornings (and even overnights) after the station became WQPD. In 1979, when Hugh Holder sold the station, he moved across town to WONN for a couple years before leaving the radio business and getting licensed to sell real estate.

By 1982 Larry had returned to radio doing what he knew best, and again with WQPD. When the station was sold a second time and became Root Communications’ WLKF, he stayed on mid-days for a few months and then left to do mornings for Tom Thornburg at Bartow’s WWBF.

He joined Hall Communications’ Lakeland combo WONN and WPCV in 1985 and, over the next 20-plus years, pulled air shifts on both, and covered news for all the Hall stations in the Lakeland cluster. In 1996 he stopped being a deejay and switched over to full time news for WONN and WLKF (which had recently been acquired by Hall from Root).

Larry used his real name at all of the stations where he worked except during the period he worked with WGTO and stations in Ocala, Daytona Beach, and Orlando. At those, he used the name Larry Green.

In 2004 he retired from radio again, wanting to spend more time with his family.  On September 5, 2008, Larry passed away from cancer at the age of 62.
