WAVP - A History

WAVP-AM 1390 Avon Park – Lee Broadcasting (Pearl Lee, president) flipped its Avon Park one-kilowatt (.077 kilowatts at night) contemporary Christian AM-1390 from WKHF to WAVP (AVon Park) in 1994. Studios were located at 801 U.S. Highway 27 South in Avon Park, with its transmitter and tower site at 1733 North Lake Pioneer Road.

Other WAVP owners included the Histed Media Group (William Mark Histed, president) and, in 2001, Anscombe Broadcasting Group Ltd. (Steven G. Reszka, president). Odyssey Broadcasting (Michael Cardillo, president) acquired WAVP in 2006 and pulled the plug on the gospel programming, opting instead to program an adult standards format with new calls – WFHT (Florida’s HoT 1390).

In 2020, Walco Enterprises LLC acquired WFHT, flipped the call letters back to WAVP, and joined the company's other Florida properties in Lakeland, Winter Haven, and Bushnell under the Boss Hogg Radio format.

Other names from WAVP history include Robert Cubero (GM/sales manager-1995), Paul Rebbman (chief engineer-1995), Maribel Ruiz (operations/PD-1997), Esther Cubero (chief operations-1999), Steve Rezka (operations-1999), and John Hinkle (news director-1999).
