WYXY - A History

WYXY-AM 1360 Cypress Gardens – Altair Communications bought Cypress Gardens’ AM-1360 WZNG from Vantage Broadcasting (Dave and Diane Buerger) in 1983. The call letters switched to WYXY but the adult contemporary music format of gold and currents remained.

Seehafer Broadcasting (Don Seehafer, president) acquired the station in 1987.
Florida Community Radio, Inc. (George Allen and Steve Samet) bought it in 1990 and changed the format and calls to adult standards/nostalgia WHNR (Winter HaveN Radio).

Other names in WYXY history include Phil Weese (sales manager-1983), Bob Ryan (PD/music director-1983), Dean Edwards (news-1983), Bob Thomas (chief engineer-1983), Rick Barrow (sales), Steve “Tell” Trager (sales, sports), Barry Foster (news), Lois Keitch (GM-1989), Al Ross (sales manager-1989), Gene Converse (operations-1989), and Bill McKee (news director-1989).
