WUGL - A History
WUGL-AM 930 Sarasota – WGUL Inc. (Carl Marcocci, president) bought Sarasota’s news/talk AM-930 WKXY in 1999 from longtime owner Sarasota Broadcasting Co. (A.G. Fernandez, president). The five-kilowatt (2.5 watts at night) AM’s calls changed to WUGL and programming flipped to a “Music Of Your Life” simulcast from new sister station WGUL-FM The Gull in New Port Richey.
WUGL‘s transmitter and four towers were located at a site east of I-75 off Dog Kennel Road, with its offices and studios located at 677 N. Washington Boulevard in Sarasota.
Salem Communications acquired WUGL in 2002 and changed the calls to WLSS. A syndicated talk format replaced the music.
Other names from WUGL history include Charles Fernandez (GM/sales manager-1999); Les Foerster (PD/1999-mornings), Denny Bateman (middays-1999), Bob Reynolds (afternoons-1999), Stu Hilder (weekends-1999), and Tom Fleming (weekends-1999).
