WWZZ - A History

WWZZ-AM 1280 Sarasota – Sun Broadcasting of Florida acquired 500-watt directional daytimer WYND in 1980 and flipped the Top 40 rocker to a “Music Of Your Life” format as WWZZ. Offices and studios were at the tower site at 2101 Hammock Place in Sarasota.

In 1984, Sun Broadcasting sold WWZZ to Central Florida Broadcasters/Sarasota Radio Ltd. (Barry F. Gerber, president). Hugh Keith Enterprises (Hugh Keith, president) bought the station in 1987. The following year, WWZZ and its nostalgia format became WSGX.

Other names from WWZZ history include Paul Delaney (GM-1981), David Allison (operations/chief engineer-1981), Jay Miller (news director-1981), Lynn Probst (business manager-1981), Marie Reiss (business manager-1982), R. James Sanders (GM-1985), Don Clark (Don Coe, ass’t manager-1985; GM-1986), Jimmy Barber (music director-1985; PD-1986), Al Stockmeier (news director-1985), Jim Grant (chief engineer-1985), Nat Bernstein (sales manager-1986), and Mercedes Trevino-Coe (promotions/news director-1986).
