WSST - A History

WSST-AM 800 Largo – WSST was a 250-watt daytime southern gospel and religious talk station licensed to Largo on AM-800. Owned by Largo Broadcasting Company (Norman Bie, Jr., president), it signed on the air May 29, 1972 from studios and a tower site at 800 8th Avenue SE in Largo.

Promoted as the Happy Family Gospel station through the 70’s, WSST switched to a country format in 1982, bumped its dial position to AM-820, and increased power output to 50 kilowatts days and 1 kilowatt nights. Then, in late 1985, the call sign switched to WRFA (Radio FloridA) and the music format to country.

Other names from WSST history include Don Painter (station manager-1974), Bob Hensler (chief engineer-1974; station manager-1975), Duffy Wilbert (music director-1974; PD-1975), Agnete S. Rose (assistant station manager-1975), David Dapper (chief engineer-1975), Rob Whitehurst (PD & news director-1976), Jan Prior (public service director-1976), Joel Barnes (PD-1977; news director-1978), Don MacAllister (assistant station manager-1978), John Sherrod (chief engineer-1978),
