WSST - A History
WSST-AM 800 Largo – WSST was a 250-watt daytime southern gospel and religious talk station licensed to Largo on AM-800. Owned by Largo Broadcasting Company (Norman Bie, Jr., president), it signed on the air May 29, 1972 from studios and a tower site at 800 8th Avenue SE in Largo.
Promoted as the Happy Family Gospel station through the 70’s, WSST switched to a country format in 1982, bumped its dial position to AM-820, and increased power output to 50 kilowatts days and 1 kilowatt nights. Then, in late 1985, the call sign switched to WRFA (Radio FloridA) and the music format to country.
