George McGovern
George R. McGovern (that’s his real name) was born in the Bronx, NY, served in the U.S. Army, and spoke several languages. He began his radio career at the age of 15 as a way to finance opera lessons. That’s right. This talented former program director and deejay wanted to perform on stage as an opera singer. Word is he had a great tenor voice.
Things didn’t work out that way though, and McGovern went on to continue his work in radio, pulling stints at WMFJ/Daytona Beach, WPDQ/Jacksonville, WLCY/St. Petersburg (1973-1975) as MD/evenings and, after a move to Lakeland, WQPD (1975-1979) and WONN (1979-1981), afternoons/PD/MD both stations.
He left Polk County in 1981, eventually got out of radio, and opened The Port Bar in St. Pete Beach, then retired some twenty years later to the Philip Benjamin Tower in St. Petersburg, where he became the “unofficial” emcee and deejay for various activities.
George passed away August 4, 2021 at the Bay Pines VA hospital in St. Petersburg at the age of 85.
