Jack Stir
Jack is perhaps remembered more for his work on WFLA-TV Channel 8 than with sister station 970 WFLA. However, he did work on the radio side as a staff announcer before the TV station ever went on the air, hosting various music programs, and announcing for a late evening music show featuring area organist and musician Danny Daniels in the 50’s and early 60’s.
??After WFLA-TV signed on the air in 1955, he hosted a couple kid’s shows. He was Air Force character Major Jack, who introduced episodes of The Little Rascals comedies weekday afternoons from 1956 to 1958, and the host for a live Saturday morning show in the late 50’s (‘Junior Auction’) featuring bay area youngsters participating in games and bidding for toys and other prizes.
During the 1960’s, Stir hosted a one-hour teen dance party (‘Hi Time’) Saturday afternoons for area high school teens (featuring local bands), a Saturday morning kids show (‘Junior Auction’), and a Saturday afternoon real estate program (‘Open House’). He was also Channel 8’s ‘relief’ weatherman from 1958 to 1962 before taking the 11 PM newscast position on a permanent basis in 1963.
Jack Stir passed away in 2001.
