Dan Whitney
 |
Dan was born in Pawnee City, Nebraska and raised on a pig farm, the son of a guitarist-entertainer and minister. He went to college at Baptist University of America and the University of Nebraska, and credits his roommates for inspiring his imitation Southern accent. He dropped out following his junior year after trying his hand as a comedian and became known as the "Freight Train of Comedy."
However, the comic became famous as ‘Larry the Cable Guy’ after developing the stereotypical redneck character, thanks to one of Tampa Bay’s great morning shows, “Ron & Ron” on Y95 WYNF in the early 90’s. The Larry character, with its thick Southern accent, recounts stories about his family using, among other expressions, his own catchphrase "Git-R-Done!" He became so popular that he has appeared on buttons, billboards and bumper stickers.
Whitney’s radio career really took off with regular radio appearances on other Florida stations, including Orlando’s WJRR, WDIZ in Panama City, and Planet Radio WPLA in Jacksonville, and other markets, too, like Omaha, Baltimore, Tulsa, Albany (NY), Portsmouth (MA), Kansas City (KS), as well as Sirius-XM’s “Blue Collar Radio.”
He’s also done quite well with his comedy albums (the first of which he released himself in 1995), appeared on his own History Channel cable TV show, (“Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy”) and developed a line of food products with a portion of the profits going to charity.
Today (2014), Whitney resides on a 180-acre farm in Lincoln, Nebraska and has a street named after him in his hometown of Pawnee City.
