Ron Hart
Ron worked at WROV in Roanoke, Virginia in 1961 and 1962 under his real name, Jimmy Witter, before taking mid-days at WALT in Tampa. In 1965 he and his wife, Angie, moved to Lakeland and Ron became WONN’s Program Director and afternoon drive personality.
A singer and recording artist in his own right, Ron occasionally played his own records on his show. Two of his favorites were “The Ghost of Gary”, a 1963 release on Columbia Records, and the self-penned “Let Me Tell You ‘Bout A Man” recorded for an independent label. A few years earlier, in the spring of 1961, he hit the national Billboard music charts for four weeks with “A Cross Stands Alone.” He recorded this one under his real name, Jimmy Witter, for United Artists Records, and the tune peaked at #89. You can hear a clip of each of these records in Audio Clips.
Ron left WONN in 1966 and went on to KSOL in San Francisco where he was known on the air as Dr. Soul. He passed away in 1974 while living in Charlotte, North Carolina.
