Pat Chamburs
Pat was from Clearwater, the son of a motorcycle cop. He joined the Navy at 17 and lost a leg in World War II when a Japanese suicide plane flew into the battleship New Mexico in December 1945.
His lengthy career in Tampa Bay radio started when he returned home for a vacation in 1950 and wound up taking a job with WFLA. He was there for several years before moving on to WDAE, WINQ, and WILZ.
In the early 60’s he owned a bookstore near the University of Tampa, The Tenth Muse and Only One Grace, and a coffeehouse next door, The House of Seven Sorrows, which featured live jazz and beatnik poetry readings. He began hosting a jazz show on Tampa’s WMNF-FM in 1983 that was a listener favorite on Wednesday nights for many years.
Pat retired to his home in St. Pete Beach in 2005 and passed away April 12, 2009 of complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 84.
