Charlie Fernandez

Charlie is a Sarasota native and 1966 graduate of Sarasota High School. He earned his BA in Mass Communications (School of Speech) and Radio/TV/Publications in 1970 at Florida State University and minored in Government.

His broadcast career goes back to WQAM/Miami in 1973 and 1976 in Boston where he was a deejay, music director and PD for WVBF-FM. Three years later, he returned to Sarasota to take over as general manager for the family’s radio station, WKXY AM-930 (Sarasota Broadcasting Company).

In 1999, after nearly 50 years of ownership by the Fernandez family, WKXY was sold to Carl Marcocci (WGUL, Inc.) who changed the call letters to WUGL and dumped the all-news format for a simulcast of WGUL, his New Port Richey “Music Of Your Life” station.

Charlie stayed on as GM under Marcocci’s ownership until 2002 when WUGL was acquired by Salem Communications and became WLSS. Since that time, he has been marketing director for Profile Racing, Inc., a St. Petersburg manufacturer of high end after market BMX, MTB, and fixed-gear bicycle components.
