Jay Black
Jay Coleman Black was a native of Gloster, Mississippi, but grew up a little farther north in Memphis. He was a graduate of Memphis State University and, during World War II, served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. In 1957, he moved from a station in Memphis to St. Petersburg as sports director for WSUN Radio and TV, a position that he held into the mid 1960’s.
Outside broadcasting, he moonlighted as the business manager for the St. Petersburg Saints minor league baseball club and wrote a sports column for the St. Petersburg Times in the early 60’s. In 1966, he was named director of the communications department at St. Pete’s Bixby Business College, where he taught radio/TV announcing and commercial copywriting courses. He was also the marketing director for Derby Lane for 26 years, delivering all of the greyhound track’s radio and television commercials from 1967 to 1993.
Jay passed away from emphysema in 1999, just nine days short of his 77th birthday.
