WCKX - A History
WCKX-FM 95.7 Clearwater – In late summer 1980, 96 Fever WOKF-FM, Clearwater’s 100,000-watt disco station, was acquired by Metroplex Communications (Norman Wain, president), which flipped it to adult contemporary 96 KX (96 Kicks) WCKX.
In 1982, Metroplex changed the station to an MOR/oldies format as Magic 96 WMGG.
Names from WCKX history include Dave Strubbe (GM 1980-81), Scott Robbins (PD 1980-81; promotions-1982), Bob Logan (middays and music director 1980-81), Dale Namminga (chief engineer 1980-1981), John Lander GM-1982), Robert W. Walker (PD-1982), Ed McMann (music director-1982), Ben Umberger (chief engineer-1982), and Smokin’ Joe Hager (1982).
