WSGX - A History
WSGX-AM 1280 Sarasota – Hugh Keith Enterprises (Hugh Keith, president) acquired Sarasota’s 500-watt nostalgia daytimer WWZZ in 1987 from Sarasota Radio Ltd. (Barry F. Gerber, president). The following year, it adopted new calls and became WSGX.
Studios were at the transmitter/tower site at 2101 Hammock Place in Sarasota. Although daytime power was still 500 watts, WSGX soon added nighttime operation at a reduced power of 340 watts.
In 1991, Keith dropped the nostalgia format for golden oldies and flipped the calls to WTMY.
Other names in WSGZ history include Don Lachance (GM-1989), Darrin Fedder (sales manager-1989), Mike Stone (PD-1989), Ed Allen (chief engineer-1989), and Big Ed Edwards (GM-1991).
