WWMI - A History

WWMI-AM 1380 St. Petersburg – ABC Radio acquired Clear Channel’s five-kilowatt WRBQ-AM and flipped the calls to WWMI (We Want MIckey) in 1999. The 5,000-watt station was branded Radio Disney with programming aimed at children and young teens, and delivered by satellite. The station’s administrative offices were at 11300 4th Street North in St. Petersburg. WWMI broadcasts 24/7 with 9800 watts days and 6500 watts at night, using one daytime and three nighttime towers  on West Gandy Boulevard.

On August 13, 2014, Disney put WWMI and twenty-two other Radio Disney stations up for sale, in order to focus more on digital distribution of the Radio Disney network. It was announced on September 15, 2015 that the last five Disney owned-and-operated stations, including WWMI, had been sold and all would be acquired by the Salem Media Group.

When Salem finally took control of WWMI, it took the station off the air.  After a short period of time, it returned in late December 2015 as AM-1380 The Biz with business news programming from the Wall Street Journal Network.

WWMI was acquired by Catholic radio operator Immaculate Heart Media from Salem in mid 2019.

Names from WWMI history as a Radio Disney affiliate included Drew Rashbaum (GM 1999; Radio Disney VP sales & marketing 2006), Todd Swenson (sales 2001), Ted Wolfe (station manager 2006), T.R. Campbell (station manager 2008), Jenene Holcomb (sales 2008), Kelli Welch (sales 2008), Betty Ott (sales 2009), and Jeanette Ethier (sales).
