Dick Stambaugh
Dick was a local boy who had worked at WBIL/Leesburg and WILZ/St. Pete Beach when Roy Nilson hired him in 1960 to do the morning drive air shift at WLCY. It was also Nilson who gave him the nickname, “The Morning Mayor of Great Tampa Bay,” although he would eventually move to evenings.
In 1962, a short two-years later, he resigned his post at the Gandy Boulevard Top 40 station and joined Miami’s WFUN. This was also when he became Dick Starr.
After a successful run in the “Sun and Fun Capital of the World,” the St. Pete native moved to San Francisco in 1968 to program KYA. Later, he became the national program director for Rounsaville Radio and owner of Opus Productions in Dallas.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Dick returned to St. Petersburg where he passed away in October 1982 at the age of 41.
