Beecher Martin
Beecher grew up in Lakeland and was a member of Lakeland High School’s Wheel Club (now called The Interact Club), a high school service organization sponsored by the Rotary Club. During his junior and senior years, he helped write and produce “The Wheel Club Presents,” the club’s Saturday night radio show on Lakeland’s WONN.
Starting out with the intentions of becoming a preacher, he discovered early on that radio was far more exciting. His early stations include WTAL in Tallahassee, where he worked while attending Florida State University, and WIVK in Knoxville. After moving back to Tampa, he worked a number of years at WFLA before joining WQYK in the late 80’s as production director with a 12 noon to 3 PM air shift. Today (2010), he is the station’s assistant PD.
Beecher’s credits include radio/TV freelance advertising work (voiceover and/or on-camera) for Walt Disney World, Delta Airlines, Visa/Mastercard, Busch Gardens, AT&T, Florida Cadillac dealers, Home Shopping Network, Florida Lottery, and Gannett/USA Today. For six years, he produced award-winning radio/TV spots for Publix Super Markets. He also had a role as Agent Skippy in the 1988 Jim Varney holiday comedy “Ernest Saves Christmas,” and taught mass communications for nine years at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
