Jim Shirah

Jim was born in Daytona Beach and decided he wanted to be a disc jockey while recording a couple songs (“I Believe” and “He”) for his 6th grade vocal teacher at the studios of hometown station WMFJ. When he noticed how much fun the deejay was having, he knew immediately that this was what he wanted to do, too.

Following high school he took some college classes (studying broadcasting, of course), and landed part-time jobs at WMFJ and Clermont’s WWFL. From there he moved on to WIRK in West Palm Beach, and then, in 1967, landed mid-days on Jacksonville’s WAPE. After taking his show from #16 to #1 in a single ratings period, the Brennans, who owned WAPE, appointed him PD and put him on mornings.

His list of stations also includes St. Petersburg’s WLCY as night jock Mike Scott beginning in 1971, and WILZ in St. Pete Beach.

Jim’s not on the radio full time any longer, but he continues to deejay dances, wedding receptions, reunions, and any other excuse he can find to play music.
