Terry McElhatton
Following a broadcasting career like his father, Dave, who had been a news anchor with KPIX-TV in San Francisco for 25 years, Terry picked up a lot of his early experience working with Tampa Bay talker WPLP in the late 70’s and went on to become news director at KNTV-TV in San Jose, CA (1989-1998).
His accomplishments included raising the legal bar for judges to find journalists in contempt of court (1996), and nearly went to jail himself for refusing to reveal a source in a murder case. When he left KNTV, he began a new career as a teacher in the television and communications department of San Jose’s Valley Christian High School.
In the summer of 2008, McElhatton suffered a fatal heart attack while on his way home from surfing with his son. He was only 52. The following fall, he was scheduled to become the professor of new media at San Jose State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
