Wes Talbot

W.W. (Wes) Talbot was the official in charge of the Tampa Weather Bureau from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. He also became a major radio personality on WDAE as a result of his daily live weather broadcasts (via telephone line) from the Tampa office. His coverage of hurricanes and other natural events for the station was delivered in a calm and reassuring manner somewhat reminiscent of the kindly grandfather on the TV show “The Waltons.”

After a December 1934 freeze, Talbot pushed for and was granted funds to establish the Florida Fruit-Frost Service, later known as the Florida Frost Warning Service, to aid agricultural interests in time of severely cold winter weather. In addition to his work with WDAE, he made scores of after-dinner speeches and wrote thousands of daily weather stories for The Tampa Times (which owned WDAE) during his years of service to Tampa Bay.
