WKGF AM & FM - A History
 |
WKGF-AM 1480 & WKGF-FM 98.3 Arcadia – Dakos Broadcasting (Dr. William N. Dakos, president) acquired Arcadia’s WOKD AM & FM from Gulf Dunes Broadcasting (Dennis Hedlund, president) in 1993 and changed their calls to WKGF.
The AM, a one-kilowatt daytimer, and the FM, a two-kilowatter, launched a contemporary Christian format simulcast (God's Great 98) from the transmitter/tower site at 201 W. Asbury Street in Arcadia.
In 1996, the combo was sold to Hall Communications (Arthur J. Rowbotham, president). The AM switched to a news/talk format and remained in Arcadia. The FM moved to Lakeland as adult contemporary WWRZ and was re-licensed to Ft. Meade in 1999.
Heartland Broadcasting Corp. (Hal Kneller, president) bought WKGF-AM and changed the calls to WZTK in 1999.
Other names in WKGF history include Bill Fowler (GM-1993), Richard Holdsworth (operations-1993), G.W. “Gibby” Sullivan (sales manager-1993; GM/PD/promotions-1994), Bruce Michaels (music/news director-1993), Jeri Sullivan (music director-1994), and Dick Parrish (chief engineer-1994).
