Jim was the highly rated WLCY morning man who took over the time slot after ‘Big Daddy’ Don Owens’ fatal motorcycle accident in 1966. He came to Tampa Bay from CHED in Edmonton, Alberta, and his show, “The Stanley Steamer,” enjoyed tremendous ratings during the years it was on.
Although other jocks may have identified him on the air by his full name, he never did. He always referred to himself as ‘the Stanley Steamer,’ or ‘Stanley,’ saying things like "You're listening to the old ‘Stanley Steamer’ on WLCY." However, his full name could be found on station promotional materials, such as jock photos and music surveys. Long-time listeners might also remember that he used a recording of an old Model A Ford cranking up in conjunction with his air name.
After leaving WLCY, Stanley remained in Tampa Bay and was hired to PD Paxson’s WWQT AM-1470 in Dunedin and sister station 106.3 WHBS in Holiday. At the latter, he was also the host of “The Make Believe Ballroom” request show each Saturday night.
After leaving radio, Jim became the spokesperson for the Florida State Fair in Tampa and was still on the job at the time of his death from a heart attack in 1993.
