WZNE - A History
 |
WZNE-FM 97.9 Clearwater – Plough Broadcasting (H. Wayne Hudson, president) took its Tampa Bay AOR 98 Rock WQXM and flipped it to Top 40 Z98 WZNE in 1983.
Plagued with poor showings each time the ARB numbers came out, Plough sold the station to Sandusky Broadcasting (Toney Brooks, president) in late 1985. The following year, the station became Classic Rock 97.9 WKRL. Sandusky relocated offices and studios from the Starkey Road transmitter site to an office complex in the Feather Sound area, north of St. Petersburg.
Names from WZNE history include Gary Kines (GM-1983), Steve Davis (PD/music director-1983), Gary Ballinger (1983, 1985), Chris Trane (1983), Johnny Sommer (1984), Wayne Osley (promotions-1984), Dale Tilley (sales manager-1984), Lynn Deppen (chief engineer-1984), Don Hibbetts (GM-1985), David Papandrea (sales manager-1985), Bob Kaghan (PD/promotions-1985), Cynthia Clarc (music director-1985), Roger Cristy (news director-1985), and Lloyd Berg (chief engineer-1985)
