WBZZ - A History
WBZZ-AM 1010 Seffner – After acquiring the rights to broadcast Howard Stern’s morning show in 2004, Infinity Broadcasting’s sports/talker WQYK-AM became “Talk Radio On the Edge” WBZZ 1010 The BuZZ. The 50,000 watt flamethrower operated from studios at 5510 Gray Street in Tampa, and a transmitter/tower site on Highway 574 in Seffner.
In addition to Stern, who was on the air mornings from 6 AM to 11AM, WBZZ’s programming featured the SportsChix from 11 AM to 1 PM, “The Afternoon Buzz” with Steve Austin from 1 to 3PM, and nationally-syndicated shows the rest of the day – “The Don & Mike Show” with D.C. shock-jocks Don Geronimo and Mike O’Meara from 3 to 7 PM, “All Comedy Radio” from 7 to 10 PM and, in late-nights, the sex-filled “Tom Leykis Show” and “The John & Jeff Show” (John Boyle and Jeff Carroll).
Weekends included a couple of local shows, “Florida Outdoors with Steve & Tom” and “The Fishing Dudes” (Capt. Todd Wood and Capt. Bob Puccinelli), plus other sports programming that included New York Yankees baseball, NFL and NCAA football, and Nascar racing.
When Stern joined Sirius satellite radio in January 2006, Infinity dumped the hot talk, and WBZZ flipped to classic country and re-instated its old call letters – WQYK-AM. That format didn’t last long – just until the following August when the station returned to all-sports.
Other names from WBZZ history include Charlie Ochs (GM) and Heidi Heinz (director of marketing and promotions).
