WHVE - A History

WHVE-FM 102.5 Sarasota – Cosmos Broadcasting changed the calls of its 102.5 WAVE-FM to The Wave 102.5 WHVE in 1986. During its five-year run, the station programmed a mix of jazz and adult contemporary and, in 1987, was branded The Suncoast’s Jazzy Alternative, with a blend of light contemporary jazz, pastoral New Age, and sophisticated pop.

In 1988, Susquehanna Radio bought WHVE (making it a sister station to newstalker WTKN, formerly WPLP) and, the following year, moved its Bradenton 26th Avenue East tower site to 283rd Street East at Gopher Hill Road East, near Myakka City. Lowell “Bud” Paxson acquired the combo in 1991 and flipped the FM format and calls to adult album alternative 102-5 The Point WHPT.

Some names from WHVE history include Blake Lawrence (PD/mid-afternoons 1986-1990), Kathy Curtis, Sandi Stepp (1986), Eric Davis (1990), Steve Callahan and Linda Blake (mornings-1990), Bob Cummings (mid-mornings-1990), Tammy Jett (late afternoons 1990), Don Brookshire (evenings-1990), Mark Krueger (overnights-1990), Gordon Obarski (general manager-1990), Norm Hale (news director-1990), Drew Rashbaum (general manager-1991), Jim Genovese, and Kira Gurnee (morning news).
