Along with his parents, Robert W. "Bobby" Nelson founded Bradenton’s WBRD AM & FM (the FM later became “The Dove” WDUV) and Sarasota-based ABC affiliate WXLT-TV Channel 40. He began his broadcasting career at the age of 15, working at the stations after school and during the summer months. Over the years, he worked as a deejay, newsman, program director, and engineer, and was vice-president of Sunshine State Broadcasting which owned WBRD.
Nelson made his home on St. Armands Key and was 57 when he passed away after a long illness in 2004.
